TARGETING, PURSUING, REPORTING

Everyday weather affects us and being prepared when severe weather occurs is important. To better understand how tornadoes work, we Prairie Storm Chasers target, purse, and report on storms, while collecting invaluable data. Providing dependable reports is critical during these events, as accuracy during adverse weather can be a matter of life and death.

This illustration depicts the limitation of radar during severe weather events. A tornado can never be confirmed until it is reported by someone on the ground.

TAZ-1

Field research projects to collect weather data are conducted yearly in the United States but less frequently in Canada. Our goal is to be the first to deploy a ground based instrument pack into a Canadian tornado. This is our instrument pack named “TAZ-1” equiptment provided by Campbell Scientific out of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and built by Curtis Brooks. Click here to see a demo!

MOBILE STATIONS

Both armoured vehicles are equipped with Campbell Scientific custom built mobile weather stations. This allows us to measure temperature, humidity, dew point, pressure, wind speed and direction in real time while out in the field. What makes these stations so special are their ability to take into consideration the direction and speed of the vehicle to get a proper reading even while in motion. Lastly these stations are calibrated to the highest standard.
